It gives better shape and edge than iron which is used to make weapons.   Engineering steels are used for general engineering and manufacturing sectors.   Steel is highly used in the automobile industry. Different types of steels are used in a car body, doors, engine, suspension, and interior. 1. Based on carbon content:
Low carbon steels
Medium carbon steels
High carbon steels
Low carbon steels:
Composition: 0% to 0.25%.
Microstructure: mainly α - ferrite and a small amount of pearls.
Properties: Excellent flexibility and rigidity. Good machinery and weldability, high formality, rigidity, high durability etc.
For example, mild steel.

Advantages: Lowest cost to produce.
Disadvantages: Martensite is difficult to produce due to its extremely low carbon content.
Applications: Automobile body components, structural shapes, pipes, sheets etc.
Medium carbon steels:
Composition: 0.25% to 0.55% C.
Microstructure: α - Ferrite and pearlite.
Properties: Stronger than less - carbon steel but less hard than that.
Advantages: Best range for adding alloying elements.
Applications: Railway wheels and tracks, gears etc.
High carbon steels:
Composition: 0.55% to 2.1% c
Microstructure: Fe3C, Pearlite (C> 0.8%), - Ferrite and Pearlite (C <0.8%).
Properties: Hardness, strong and minimal flexibility compared to low carbon steels.
Advantages: Making tool steels.
Applications: Knife, hack saw blade, chisel, hammer, drill, die, machine tool cutter, punch etc.
2. Based on the method of making steels:
Based on the method of manufacture of steels, they are classified as Bessemer steel method and electric arc furnace method, the explanation of which is given below.


Basemer steel method:
The principle of the Bessemer converter is to remove impurities from the iron by oxidation and to blow air through the molten iron.

The furnace is made of steel with fire bricks to resist heat.


Impure manganese (MN) and silicon (C) are converted into their respective oxides and they can be extracted.

Electric arc furnace method:
This is a very hot confined region, where heat is generated using electrodes to melt certain substances like steel (scrap) without changing the electrochemical properties of the (metal).


The electric arc generated between the electrode and the metal is used to melt the metal (scrap).

3. Based on the properties of some other types of steels:
Shock-resistant steels
High strength steels
Instrument steels
Spring steels
Heat resistant steels
Shock-resistant steels:
These steels can withstand fatigue loads and shock loads.

High strength steels:
Applied where low weight and high strength are required.

Tool steels:
They are mainly used in their hot or cold conditions for cutting, forming and forging tools and dies.

Spring steels:
Used to make coils and leaf springs.


Heat resistant steels:
These steels can resist corrosion, oxidation and creep at high working temperatures.

4. Based on the effect of alloying components on steel:
Cobalt / Molybdenum:
It has high service temperature or high temperature stability.
Chromium:
It improves rust resistance and abrasion resistance.
Vanadium:
It represents high temperature, hardness and strength.
Aluminum:
It improves fracture toughness and acts as a deoxidant.
Phosphorus:
It increases strength, stiffness and improves machinery.
Sulfur:
It improves machinability.
Silicone:
It shows high hardness.
Magnesium:
It is rough and improves efficiency.
Manganese:
Insert resistance and hardness is high.
