What is Planetary gear working principle, advantage, used, ratio of gear, manufacturers in India
Introduction of Planetary Gear
A planetary gear set is made up of three types of gears; A sun gear, planet gear and a ring gear. In the centre sun is located it can be shows as yellow, and transmits torque to the planet gears as shown in fig.as blue which are typically mounted on a movable carrier in fig.shows as green. The planet revolves around the Sun gear and Aries with an outer ring gear (pink). The gear systems can vary from complex to complex to complex compound systems depending on the application.
material of Planetary Gear made in manufacturing ?
Basically planetary gear box made of material like 1.Steel 2. Aluminium 3. Iron and 4. Brass.
Working principle of Planetary gear box
Planetary gear ratio
Advantage of Planetary gear
- Planetary gear trains provide high power density in comparison to standard parallel axis gear trains.
- They provide a reduction in volume, multiple kinematic combinations, purely torsional reactions, and coaxial shafting.
- Planetary gear system could be used to secure higher gear ratio in compact space. Therefore we prefer to use planetary gearing arrangement where we need to reduce the speed in compact space.
- For similar gear ratio, planetary gear system will have light weight as compared to traditional gearbox.
- Power transmission efficiency will be quite good as compared to traditional gearboxes i.e. higher proportion of input energy will be delivered with the help of such gearing arrangement.
- Planetary gear system will have higher torque transmission capability and will have lower inertia.
- As we are looking here that load which is being transmitted will be shared between multiple planet gears, hence load distribution will be quite good and torque transmission will also be increased by using planetary gearing arrangement.
- In case of planetary gear system, driving member and driven member are concentric and therefore driving and driven equipments could be installed in same line which will result space saving.
- Planetary gearing arrangement will provide the higher stability
- Service life will also be quite good if we compare it with traditional gearboxes service life for similar load.
Disadvantages of Planetary Gear
- high bearing loads,
- constant lubrication requirements,
- inaccessibility,
- design complexity
- Cost of planetary gear system will be high as compared to traditional gearbox.
- Planetary gear system designing and manufacturing are quite complex.
- Determination of efficiency of planetary gear system will be difficult
- Gearing should be accurate
- Some planetary gearing arrangement makes additional sound during operation.
- To avoid any additional gearing, driving member and driven member must be concentric

FAQ Questions about planetary gearboxes :
What are planetary gears?
Ans.Planetary gears are a system of gears consisting of three main components: sun gear, ring gear and two or more planetary gears located in the center of the sun gear, the ring gear is the outermost gear and the planetary gears are around the sun and inside the ring gear.
Planetary gears in What is "Sun Gear"?
Ans.Sun gear is a gear wheel in the planetary gear system, which revolves around its own axis and has other gears (planetary gears) that revolve around it. Just like the sun and the planets in our solar system.
How many planetary gears are in the gearbox?
Ans.The amount of planetary gears in the gearbox varies based on the gear ratio. Most planetary gearboxes have two to five planetary gears. When looking at planetary gears, the power of the gearbox is usually determined by the size of the sun gear. Larger sun gears allow higher torque values.
What are the advantages of planetary gear?
Ans.High precision, right angle configuration, braking system, low noise and maintenance free.
What is a planetary gearbox?
Ans.The term Planetary Gears refers to a system of gears consisting of three main components: Sun Gear, Ring Gear and Planetary Gears Sun Gear is located in the center, Ring Gear is the outermost gear and Planetary Gears is around the Sun and inside Ring Gear.
What are the advantages of a planetary gearbox?
Ans.Planetary gearboxes have high power density and large reduction in small volume also pure torsional reaction and coaxial shafting.
What are the disadvantages of planetary gearbox?
Ans.Some of the disadvantages of planetary gearboxes include belows :
1.constant lubrication,
2.high bearing loads,
3. the need for complex designs.
How do I choose my gearbox?
Ans.There are many types of gearboxes made all over the world. Choosing from different gearbox types depends on your application. Gearboxes are available in a wide range of sizes, sizes, functions and backlash features. These design elements will affect the performance and price of your gearbox. There are many types of gearboxes: bevel, helical, spur, worm and planetary.
Planetary gearboxes are commonly used in which industry?
Planetary gearboxes have used in a industries like automotive industry in cars also aerospace, some used in agriculture field accesories, food processing industries.
What is the difference between planetary gearbox and spur gears with helical gears?
Planetary units with helical gears have higher torque capacity than spur gears and run quietly.
What are planetary gearboxes?
Planetary gearboxes are high-precision, speed-control devices that produce a sufficient amount of torque for their size, high torsional stiffness and low backlash - which makes them suitable for a wide range of applications.
What is a planetary gearbox?
How do planetary gearboxes work?
The planetary gearbox takes high-speed, low-torque input from the motor, then slows it down and increases the torque at the output through the gear ratio.
How do I tell if my planetary gearbox has too much friction?
Excessive lubrication, endurance factors, and poor gear or bearing quality can increase the amount of friction and drag. Each quantity and size has an acceptable range for drag and the crop level should be measured in both directions.
Should I use oil or grease to lubricate my granular gearbox?
Ans.Here is oil and grease can effectively lubricate planetary gearboxes. However the advantage of providing a lifetime lubrication of the grease box is in Greece - it removes a lot of maintenance. Greece allows climbing in any direction and eliminates any concerns about leaks. The oil requires some period of maintenance and lubrication - usually every few thousand hours. Orientation with oil grease can also be difficult and restrictive. So, the sealing required for an oil-filled gear head often generates more heat than saving oil. These ideas should be considered when deciding on a lubricant for your aapplication
What materials are grashell gears made of?
Grassle gears are made of which material?
Planetary gears are made of hardened steel for the longest possible life.
Are spur and planetary gearboxes bi-directional?
Yes,
both spur and planetary gearboxes are designed to be used for two-way
operation. The arrangement of the gears and the rotating direction of
the input shaft of the gearbox determine the rotation of the output
shaft. For bidirectional applications, the backlash of the gearbox
should be considered.
