Difference between orthogonal and oblique cutting

Table of contents (toc)
Learn and read some information about Difference between orthogonal and oblique cutting or orthogonal vs oblique cutting.defination of orthogonal cutting and oblique cutting. There are two basic methods of metal cutting using single point cutting tool as below or

  1. Defined Orthogonal cutting.
Orthogonal cutting is also known as the Two Dimensional Cutting .
In orthogonal cutting, the cutting edge of tool is perpendicular to the line of action or path of the tool.

  1. Oblique cutting or Three Dimensional Cutting :

In oblique cutting, the cutting edge of tool is inclined at angle less than 90° to the line of action or path of the tool.

This process done with the help of lathe machine as we know that .this is basic concept of lathe how tool movement work and how to to materials cuts . example like an facing,t hiaper,turning,boring,drilling..This is operations done with turning movement.

Now to the discuss about Difference between orthogonal and oblique cutting or orthogonal vs oblique cutting.

There is some important Difference between orthogonal and obliqur cutting :

    1.Direction of cutting tool..

In orthogonal cutting is cutting edge of tool perpendicular to the direction of cutting edge or motion of tool.
    And
In oblique cutting is cutting edge of tool is incline at angle less than 90° to the line of action or path of the tool.

    2.Chip flows..

In orthogonal cutting, Chip flows over the tool face And flow of velocity of direction is normal to the cutting edge

In oblique cutting, the Chip flows on tool face and makes some angle with normal cutting edge..

3.Another name of orthogonal and oblique cutting..

In orthogonal cutting only two forces are acting on the tool that's why it's also called as two dimensional cutting.

In oblique cutting there is three components of forces act at the cutting edge hence also called as three dimensional cutting

    4.Chip formation

Discontinus chips are formed when Orthogonal cutting.

In oblique cutting there is continuous  chips are formed .

    5.Tool life

Tool life of orthogonal cutting tool is lesser than than the oblique cutting tool.

In oblique cutting the tool life is more better as compared to the  Orthogonal cutting tool.

    6.Heat concentration

In orthogonal cutting heat will no be accumulated..

In oblique cutting, heat will accumulated at tool chip interface.

    7.Application

Orthogonal cutting process used for grooving, slotting, parting cutting.

Oblique cutting is also used for the grinding, drilling,milling.. operations.
